I find myself immersed in Dimitris Agapiou’s work. It calls to me of memory, past experiences, it feels political. There is an edginess to the placement of the metal sculpture, where the artist intends to manipulate the space through the use of his materials. It feels like an observation of a political-social event. The materials play as symbols. There is familiarity. The stone for me represents home.
This work is reminiscent of the British artist Mike Nelson’s works, who is known for the strong cultural and subcultural references in his installations. Similarly, to Nelson, I find that Agapiou’s intends with his work to undermine its location placement. As a result, the work implies strong feelings of displacement.
