Alexander Yates’s two connected short films puts the viewer in an uncomfortable position of watching the buildup to an imminent disaster, or so it seems at first.
Yates has used promotional footages and holiday photos to fabricate an eerie atmosphere that turns a small hotel into the setting of something sinister. ’In The Shallow End’ and ‘In The Fridge’ both explore how repressed memories can be relived through the online world and how misrepresentation is very common in such spaces.
Yates turned the material he had into something completely different without having to change much, but the few things that did change mad a remarkable impact on how the films were perceived. The horror-esque music and the google earth rendering all adds to the feeling of dread that is a constant thought this artwork that is very much of its time.
