Natalka Newman’s works fall under the established genre of still life. I was particularly drawn to this piece from my own interest in ‘domestic space’. Newman’s process appears to explore subjects of possession, one’s personal environment and perhaps memory; utilising familiar objects, with those that are less obvious to the viewer. The composition highlights the significance of the home considering the current social situation. There is a sense of unity throughout the composition, but the placement of particular objects, through perspective, such as the musical instrument, draws attention to a focal point, perhaps suggesting harmonious qualities.
