Drawing student Lauren Davies creates feelings of the unfamiliar through her drawings and sculptures which depict distorted household objects. Davies’ bed frame could be compared to Palestinian multimedia and installation artist Mona Hatoum’s 2002 piece ‘Webbed’, which similarly depicts a dysfunctional domestic object. This purposeful creation of defective materiality encourages the audience to question the object’s purpose and functionality. The title ‘Basketbone’, which has been attached to one of the photographs documenting the sculpture, suggests a connection between human and object anatomy. The two unfamiliar but somehow bone-like objects secured to two of the feet of the bed continue these themes of uncertainty while the bent, skinny frame is also suggestive of fragility and dysfunctionality.
