The display of the work naturally drew me in, the black void-like silhouette of a face resembling a venetian mask or evil character depicted through the stereotypical profile of a witch’s face encouraged a stream of thoughts. The black wood of the chair paired with the darkness of the silhouette emitted an ominous atmosphere especially with the placement of the profile, composed straight through the neck. There is a clear correlation between Salvador Dali’s clocks and the illusion of the body drooping over the wooden beam. The surrealist aspect to the sculptures is another feature that attracted me to the work, the abstract depictions of a human body and a face in relation to the composition made me question what the artist is trying to communicate, are the connotations of surrealism suggesting a creative outlet for the subconscious mind? which then leads to the question of what is going through the subconscious mind of the artist and what are the works representing.
