Thori Ingles’ work shows exploration of time, process, and presence. Ingles seems to embrace the meditative nature of her method and through the repetitive process of using the pencil spinning top to create unpredictable marks on a page, she produces a piece which can only be said to represent that moment in time. The title 4 hours 42 minutes adds to the sense of presence and shows the artist’s focus and dedication to the act. The use of humble materials highlights further the importance of the process. The simple, repetitive approach seems to reflect how many of us have spent the past year at home doing the same thing each day, however, it also seems to encourage a moment of reflection and time away from our normal lives by taking something so simple and dedicating a period of time to that one act.
